The entry from a few weeks ago, where you were to guess what place it might be.

Here it is.

It’s inspired by a picture I took when I was on a mission trip to Indonesia, 2 years ago.

It was a year after the tsunami, and this was one of the places affected. There used to be things, houses there, but it was all devastated. I heard many stories from people and how the “sea is coming”, and their attempts to run to the hills.

I was there at sunset, and there were many palm trees. And that is all.

It’s good for me to keep some of those images fresh in my mind, so as not to forget what happened there.

Even when on this day, it looked so beautiful and peaceful.

This piece was a challenge from an artistic point of view.

It’s made on a 10×10 canvas with Caran D’ache watersoluble wax crayon. It was my first time using this material as the main material for the whole piece. I struggled to make it work, but I’m glad I did it. It was weird because I would color with it, and the use a brush to smooth it out and blend it. But at times, this would end up lifting up the paint, which was very frustrating. This is one reason why it took me long to finish it.

It’s not a great photo, because the piece was bigger than the scanner, so I had to do it in 2 parts. I will re-upload with a photo of the piece later.

I’m fairly happy with the final result but would love any comments and critiques.

Any body have any places they would like to suggest?

I am so excited by these recent developments…

All of you know, by now, that I went to Indonesia for 2 weeks last november. I helped out by doing some graphic design work which you can view and download here.

The biggest change in my heart was about a call to pray. Not in a distant sorta way, like ” God, I pray for the missionaries all over the world”, but one where I can site names of people, and know what some of the work and struggles are, and pray specifically for them. But it was more than that still. It was a sense in praying where I’m handing off, “passing the buck”, if you will, of my small, tiny, human request, to my great God. The one who made all things, and yet cares about me, and my little skewed world. That’s the God who I’m praying to, and that is no small insignificant thing. That is an awesome chance, and responsibility that God has given to us. Once we’ve been confronted with something to pray about, that is not just some light, willy-nilly nothing thing. That is our chance to be involved in what God’s gonna do. That is so cool!!!

Anyway, I was content with that. Happy to have had a part in helping with my talents, and excited at having been to Asia, and experienced so much. Glad to have a partnership of prayer with people who never even met me, but whom I’m called to pray for, because they need to know about Jesus’ love.
But it seems God has more for me to do…

Because of the website I put together, with the differnt promotional pieces for people to pray, I was asked to help with a bit more, in order to add some more info about Aceh to the page I’d created. My yes to that, and the desire to do more, has grown into a chance to design a whole website with info and more about Aceh. That is extremely exciting; that my 2 week mission trip did not end with just 2 weeks.
Please be praying for me and for the people who will be involved in the project, so that we can communicate clearly with each other over all this distance, and that I would have God’s breath of creativity to do what he would have me to for this project. And for Fabio, as he helps with coding.

But most of all, join with me in praying that thru the love of Christians, non-Christians in Indonesia would be drawn to Christ.

If you don’t know what Montezuma’s Revenge is, I hope you never have to find out. And I don’t mean the video game or the european band.
Two nights ago, I was faced with frequent trips to the bathroom, and am just today starting to feel better.
Yeah, somewhere along the way I ate something that was infected. This is a common occurence for travelers to third world countries. So, I guess it’s another part of this great adventure I’m on.
I’ve felt super weak, crazy headache, and especially lonely with no one to care for me, but I’m on the amend, and today I am at the office, chugging away at my design work, hoping to finish as much as possible while here.
I have today and tomorrow, and then I head back stateside, so the rush is on.

I haven’t posted in a few days, and I know some of you are looking to the blog to the blog to get my updates.
So here’s a new one.
For the last day and a half, I’ve been in a different area of the country, though it’s in the same island. I will leave in the morning, and that is why this is the whirlwind trip.
Today I got to visit a couple different shore lines, and get a bit of perspective on what happened here. No matter how much I say,it won’t be clear enough, and it will be understand, without having seen it.
The wave that came on the shore we were in tonight, got hit with a 70 foot wave, that crested some 300 meters in. That is one massive wave!!!!
I’ve had a chance to talk to some survivors, see some of the conditions here now, got a little shopping in, and we had a bonfire on the beach tonight. It’s been incredible.
Now I must go to bed, cause I have a headache and am exhausted, plus, I have to leave back to the city of Medan in the morning!
Salamat Malam (Goodnight)

A weekend to remember for sure.
I can’t even begin to describe, and right now I don’t have time to tell all the stories.
In short, I spent a whole day with indonesian people. It was superb to wander where the people really go.
We went to the central pasar, which is the traditional market, where people buy their veggies and other stuff.
We ate at the food court at the mall, but all the food choices were asian foods.
Then we went up the mountain, to the town of Berastagi. It was real rainy (thus, the wet season) and foggy, so we couldn’t see the volcano mountain, but the trip and the views were spectacular, nonetheless.
Then, at the end of the night, we ate at the night (food in the street) market, just like the locals do.
By the end of the day, I didn’t even feel like I was being starred at.
More stories to come later.
Tonight I spent the better part of the day with some leaders and their family. It was a good, calm day.
Please be praying as tomorrow I head into a different, more strict part of the country. I will get to see first hand what the tsunami did.

Its 3:20 am.
I am yet to get a full nights sleep. It doesnt matter if I stay up late or go to sleep early, I always get up in the middle of the night.
Today is no different, but Im more awake than usual.
Anyway, one of the things Im doing to help here, is looking thru 6 dvds worth of pictures, of the aftermath of the tsunami. Mostly taken by volunteer groups that have come throughout the year, to help rebuild, or provide medical care, or build wells, etc. Ive already gone thru 3 of these dvds, and seen literally thousands of pictures of the destruction left behind. Im separating out the best pictures, so that I and other people who come after me, will have a more selective file of pictures to pull from, for various media projects in the future.
I must say that it is extremely depressing to look at these photos. The people were left with nothing.
And then just a few minutes ago I watched a short movie, compiled with several life footage of the actual tsunami event, as people attempted to run, and climb for their lives, in order to literally save themselves from the unbelievable force of the water. All this, as they watched their homes, and all their possessions just being broken in pieces, and washed away. It was insane! The anniversary of the tsunami is coming up, and it was really good for me to be reminded of what happened there.
If you have forgotten, go here.
Next week I am going to get to visit the area where the tsunami hit. Please pray that God would use that time in my life to be inpactful, in whatever way he sees fit.
Also, it will be wonderful to meet up with the team for a few more days.

Below are 4 pictures that are some of the common sites in Medan.
1.loaded becak
2. mini buses-public transportation
3. “homeless” woman and daughter
4. goat sate with rice – yesterday’s

Today I spent a good part of the day around town.
I went on a couple errands with a driver on staff, who speaks a little bit of English.
It was a really good opportunity to learn more indonesian, and to see the city.
The macet, or traffic, was heavy everywhere we went, as previously explained; I think it’s always relatively heavy, considering the amount of motorcycles and other small vehicles crowding all around.
I’ve resigned to the fact that I have a big sign on my head that says “orang asing” – foreigner, so I just have to deal with being looked at all the time I’m outside.
On a positive note, I’ve been invited to join an american family for an outing tomorrow night, when the kids go ice skating in the mall. I know, it sounds wrong, but it’s not. There’s a ice skating rink in the big SunPlaza Mall, right by my hotel. Go figure!!!
Pictures will come later…

I don’t even know where to begin. There’s so much to tell, I definitely will not be able to put it all into one entry; even stuff just from yesterday.

God is good, no matter what part of the world you are in. So that is of great comfort.

The team I’ve been with, left today. They will go on to do some rebuilding work, and some ESL work. They’ve been a great part of my joy for the last couple days. Its been great getting to know other people, and having uninterrupted conversations. But alas, after today, I will be on my own. It will be a growing experience, to have so much time to myself.

With that comes all the stimulus of yesterday…

Unfortunately, due to some unexpected changes, all we did was get lunch/short orientation and then half of the team from Missouri went on their trip, and the other half were left behind. We were hoping to be able to do some work, but it seems there wasn’t anything for the team as a whole to do, so we spent a little time sightseeing.

We hired a cab for a 2-hour tour, and he drove us to some tourist areas. We went to a Sultans Palace, which was kinda like a museum, and then onto a very large Mosque. After that we just pretty much drove around Medan, just taking it all in.
I can’t begin to explain what traffic was like
It was a million mopeds and small bikes zooming around. Some had just the driver, but many had families with young children on them. Some bikes had a type of rickshaw, or becak, as they call it here, attached to them. Then there were small buses, smaller than the Volkswagen 70′s van, which seemed to be somewhat kinda like bus lines, some with their back doors open. They were very colorful. Then there were a few small minivans, and mostly Japanese cars. Everybody is driving on the “wrong” side of the road. There are a few traffic lights, and the drivers ignore them. There are no lanes, and sometimes, cars just go head to head towards one another, and they manage not to hit each other. Intersections are a nightmare. All this infused with loud and unique car honks, heavy smell of fuel from all the bikes, and people all over the place.
That was our fully immersed in Medan event. It was awesome and overwhelming all at the same time.

The food is great. Some spicy, and some really different, but mostly, real cheap and yummy! Today I had a piece of fried chicken with rice and some spicy vegetables. It all came wrapped up in a banana leaf instead of a container. I also had coconut water to drink.

I’ve taken many pics, but mostly with my film camera. I will try to take a few more of the traffic with the little digital camera, so all can see what things are really like

Today I worked in the office, and I’m posting this from the organization’s office.
I’ve been around Indonesians all day long, and I’m learning a few words. I worked on sorting photos, and I am starting to work on a few designs.

I might get to do a bit more sightseeing today, with some of the workers here, and that should be nice, and less overwhelming, as I will be with the natives, who also speak a bit of English.

Continue to pray for mine and the whole team’s safety.

Yup, just a couple days to go now.
There’s a sense of excitement, and great expectancy for what is to come!
A bit of anxiety concerning not leaving behind anything which is necessary.
Not looking forward to the 36 hours/5 flights it will take me to get there.
Looking forward to the adventures before me.
Praying for a chance to be an encouragement, as well as the creative resource that is needed.
Wondering what the break from motherhood will do to me…
Like a kid in an ice cream shop, I am drooling over the potential for wonderful photos, still mourning the death of my c-5050 digicam, but grateful for a borrowed film slr. (thanks Rock!)
And of course, don’t forget, trying all those wonderful different dishes.

I covet your prayers for myself; and for Fabio and the boys as I leave them behind.

Check back here for my updates.

yes, it’s finally real. tickets have been purchased, and i will be going on my mission trip in a month.
Most of you reading this know that I will be going to Indonesia. I will be helping with my graphic design skills, to put together presentations and other materials to help the missionaries already there. I am so excited that it’s finally happening. It’s been a long saga, many times over, the dates have changed, and I’ve been left wondering whether I was part of the team or not. But this journey, which began in late April, is finally coming to fruition! Praise God!
If you’re reading about this for the first time, and would like to be one of my prayer partners, drop me a note, and I’ll include you in my email updates. Also, if you’d like to contribute financially [I'm raising my own support], I can give you more details via email.

On another exciting note, Graffiti 2, our churches new ministry, has started their afterschool programs, so please keep Andrew, the director, and the ministry in your prayers!
I received a picture of the mural I painted, that looks a lot better than my cell phone camera pic, and since people are in the pic, it gives a lot better sense of the size of the painting.

Enjoy!
