Okay, October is upon us, and I want to start the month off right.
I’m looking for suggestions on what might be a good theme or project for me to embark on.
Keep in mind I’m hoping to create a series/body of work that will be unified and possibly suitable to present to a gallery or some other venue like the Banana Factory.
Much like 30 faces or Everyday in May, I want to let October have it’s own name.
Here’s where you come in…
Is there a particular style of mine you are particularly fond of?
Is there a subject matter that you think fascinating, and you think I should tackle, visually?
If you need to see what kinds of things I’ve done in the past, check out the gallery page.
I’m not looking to embark on something new, as far as technique or medium. I already have plenty of different styles. I’m looking to unify some of my wide array of medium and styles in order to learn a bit of focus in the process.
I’m realistic to the fact that maybe it will be a month of learning, and possibly no finished pieces will come from it.
But regardless, learning should always be a part of my journey.
I will keep you posted as to what I decide and my daily progress.
I will send a photo card with a print of my photography to everyone who gives me a suggestion.
If you’re reading this on facebook, I’d appreciate it if you actually came and left the comment on my website.

Hey, I’m just saying hello. I left my suggestion on facebook. :0)
Miss you guys!!
I think you should do watercolor/ink (my favorite, but that’s probably not the technical name?). Maybe one every other day. And I think you should have the boys or Fab help make a story for you to illustrate as subject matter. Like if they pick the topic, or story line, or event of that day, and you illustrate it, and show them, and they develop the next part of the story. Maybe. I’m not sure if I often see you draw from brain pictures vs. real pictures, but that might be a challenge. ?
I really like your watercolor/pen & ink work, I also like just your pencil sketches as well.
My suggestion is to look around the area you live for inspiration, the working farms, harvest festivals, parks (with snakes in the stream!).
Also it might be interesting to do a photo essay about October in the area. it could be a challenge to make the everyday interesting, don’t they tell writers to write what you know, Im suggesting you draw what you know.
I really thought about this, I’m not just copying!!! I also love the watercolor/ink. My favorite of course is the desert sunset you did for us in MN back in 91 or 92??? I have enjoyed your photos of your life in PA this summer…garden, butterflies, nature in general, festivals, family, things you love. Everyday moments that mean so much when you slow down to appreciate them…#4 image of your neice and #6 watermelon… So maybe you can just draw/paint these October photo ops as they happen.
How about starting out by thinking about INSIDE/OUTSIDE… This was assignment I remember from art school. The medium doesn’t matter. If you start to get ideas about INSIDE/OUTSIDE then you will know what materials to use and you may want to use many different materials. Each piece should incorporate the idea in some way. There are millions of ways to look at it. good luck with whatever you end up choosing! …just thought I would give an idea, although I may be late with it.
I like the drawing of the person walking through the plants for sale in the city….looks like spring cause people have coats on and they look like spring flowers to me. Could you do the same theme for fall? Someone walking passed a plant store with mums, pumpkins & corn stalks for sale?
Or, the bird on a winter branch…..a different bird on a fall branch?
Thanks guys for all the input.
@Lynne– I’m gonna tuck your idea away, and use it in the future. I’m starting to get ideas, and will keep some sketches in order not to forget.
